Electric Utility Tackles Oily Water Discharge with HalenHardy Decanters

High-voltage transformer spills at transmission and distribution sites most often end up in sub-surface oil retention pits that are designed for the purpose. Although this contains the oil and helps to prevent discharges, cleanup is time consuming and costly because it involves removing shale from the bottom of the pit, replacing the felt liner, powerwashing the pit; and then replacing each component.

After reviewing the costs of these types of incidents, and acknowledging Baltimore Gas and Electric’s (BGE) commitment to preserving the environment, company leaders challenged their construction and maintenance team to find a better solution for the oily water mix that often contained a surfactant. The team developed a pumping system that draws water out of the pit and through a HalenHardy Decanter to remove trace oils so that the water meets discharge requirements.
